I want to wish you all a very happy new years and may your 2023 or Reiwa 5 Nen be full of adventure, fun, low stress, and with great happiness for all.


Quick Japanese Lesson, how do you say Happy New Years in Japanese.

明けましておめでとうございます Lets break it down

明けまして, あけまして、Akemashite, The old year has passed, in literal terms.

おめでとうございます、Omedetougozaimasu, means congratulations in a formal way.

Akemashite Omedetougozaimasu means Happy New Year.


How this statement is used? Use it when you meet a friend, work collogue, or someone you might know or acquainted with when your first meet them after the new year.

Akemashite Omedetou Gozaimasu is usually followed by the following statement.


There is a formal and informal way of using this

今年もよろしくお願いします Lets break it down

今年も ことしも Kotoshi mo This year also

よろしくお願いします よろしくおねがいします Yoroshiku Onegai Shimasu This statement is very often used in Japanese and in many different situations but lets use it in the case wishing a person a happy new year, this statement means please treat me well this year too.


Informal way

This is said to your friends, family, and people close to you.

今年もよろしくお願いします ことしもよろしくおねいがいします Kotoshimo Yoroshiku Onegaishimasu This means Please treat me well this year too.


The formal Way

今年もよろしくお願いいたします ことしも よろしくおねがい いたします Kotoshi Mo Yoroshiku Onegai itashimasu. The itashimasu adds a sense of humbleness to your statement. This statement is used when you are meeting a boss, cowokers, a teacher, anyone who is of higher rank then you are, your Cho Nai Kai members (neighborhood group if your apart of one) or somone your not well acquainted with.


Putting it all together:

Full Informal Statment: Wishing someone a happy new year.

明けましておめでとうございます ake mashite omedetou Gozaimasu

今年もよろしくお願いします  kotoshi mo yoroshiku onegaishimasu


Full Formal Statement: Wishing someone a happy new year.

明けましておめでとうございます ake mashite omedetou gozaimasu

今年もよろしくお願いいたします kotoshi mo yoroshiku onegai itashimasu
